Can someone please explain this to me.. Some time ago I installed sgml-tools, my /var/lib/dpkg/status entry for it looks like this:
Package: sgml-tools Status: install ok installed Priority: optional Section: text Installed-Size: 757 Maintainer: Sven Rudolph <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Version: 1.0.9-1 Replaces: linuxdoc-sgml Provides: linuxdoc-sgml Depends: libc6 (>= 2.0.7u), sp (>= 1.1.1-3), sgml-data (>= 0.02), sgml-base, gaw k, perl (>= 5.004.04-4) Suggests: bsdmainutils, groff, latex, dvips, texinfo, info-browser Conflicts: linuxdoc-sgml Description: converters for the linuxdoc DTD (and others) [..] Now, in slink there is also a sgml-tools, but it looks like this: Package: sgml-tools Version: 1.0.9-1 Priority: optional Section: text Maintainer: Sven Rudolph <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Depends: libc6 (>= 2.0.7u), sp (>= 1.1.1-3), sgml-data (>= 0.02), sgml-base, gawk, perl (>= 5.004.04-4) Suggests: groff, latex, dvips, texinfo, info-browser Conflicts: linuxdoc-sgml Provides: linuxdoc-sgml Replaces: linuxdoc-sgml Architecture: i386 Filename: dists/stable/main/binary-i386/text/sgml-tools_1.0.9-1.deb Size: 336532 MD5sum: 69a60f69ab4ef513bc43cad93a114191 Description: converters for the linuxdoc DTD (and others) [...] Notice they have the same version number, but my version suggests: bsdmainutils but the slink version does not! How on earth did this happen? Am I looking at a dpkg bug or a ftp archive bug? This also has happend with the super package, here is it's entry from slink's package file: Package: super Version: 3.12.1-1 Priority: optional Section: admin Maintainer: Martin Schulze <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Depends: libc6 Architecture: i386 Filename: dists/stable/main/binary-i386/admin/super_3.12.1-1.deb Size: 97344 MD5sum: 95ade5b97b43b1f60bcf681fd975e082 Description: Execute commands setuid root installed-size: 177 And from potato: Package: super Version: 3.12.1-1 Priority: optional Section: admin Maintainer: Martin Schulze <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Depends: libc6 Architecture: i386 Filename: dists/unstable/main/binary-i386/admin/super_3.12.1-1.deb Size: 95946 MD5sum: 5b6b6def72068fb74f7df296259dae6c Description: Execute commands setuid root installed-size: 171 Notice they are the same package version but are obviosly different? What gives? Older APTs will -NOT- upgrade when the versions are the same! It was my understanding that it was our policy to never upload a different package with the same version number, it seems the archive scripts have a bug and are allowing people to do this which is very bad. :< Thanks, Jason
