Why pristine-tar, what is your goal?  Yes, it is known to be clunky,
because it need to redo all compression and assembling stuff, in all the
compression version variants.

It doesn't explain why nobody seems to be able to reproduce Julien's issue (but don't even though I tried).

We've been using pristine-tar for a long time in the OCaml team, mainly because it's the way git-buildpackage works out of the box. We haven't considered alternatives...
