  Description : streaming audio server

The Lyrion Music Server is the server software that powers audio players from Logitech (formerly known as Slim Devices), including Squeezebox 3rd Generation, Squeezebox Boom, Squeezebox Receiver, Transporter, Squeezebox2, Squeezebox and SLIMP3. The LMS server also powers various open-source clients using the same protocols.

Before version 9.0 LMS was known as Logitech Media Server, and before 7.7 LMS was known as Squeezebox Server (version 7.4 to 7.6) and SlimServer (before 7.4). Version 7.7 was the last version released by Logitech, from version 7.8 and onwards LMS had been released by the LMS Community.

While being rather old, this piece of software is still seeing regular maintenance and it seems to have build a steady community. This source package existed in Debian before, but was removed in 2008 [1]. Nowadays, multiple distributions ship the server, e.g. NixOS, ArchLinux and FreeBSD ports.

The upstream source vendors several (old) copies of CPAN packages of which several have local modifications. It seems that nearly everything can be replaced by dependencies on existing Debian packages. The upstream source also contains firmware for the hardware devices, but Debian can't distribute that.

I'm still in the phase of qualifying my work as clearly stripping out the vendored code can be a source of bugs, but I wanted to share my intent and to start the NEW process to check that I didn't overlook a critical copyright or license issue with the source.

Paul
