I'd like to take this chance to suggest, instead of writing more documentation, changing the autopkgtest packaging so that it is split into various per-backend packages, each of which provides a ready-to-go pre-configured environment. See <https://bugs.debian.org/1039958#22>.

It has also been suggested in the past, to split off the backends from src:autopkgtest (it too late for me to dig that up). The current autopkgtest maintainers were positive to the idea when it was proposed years ago, and at least I would applaud it when maintenance of the backends was taken away from us.

I would expect that part of that way forward would be to agree on a clear expectation what's in scope and what's not in scope of all backends [1]. It's clear that the autopkgtest backends have outgrown autopkgtest. Maybe they don't belong there.

[1] Recently I started to work on a different way that autopkgtest would talk to the testbed (via ssh). That may or may not be appropriate for its use by sbuild. See bug 1068588.
