Managing VPN connections or 802.1X authentication for ethernet connections is nicer with NetworkManager for desktop computers too. For computers with static networking (where static might still mean DHCP) systemd-networkd might be sufficient as well. This might also include a subset of desktop computers, but I think the better default is still NM and it is up to the administrator to configure an alternative. Ansgar
