I'm sorry, but I think the only way in which that horse is dead is that no one has proposed patches to dpkg. Simon has raised a valid issue with doing the transition in something other than dpkg. I don't quite agree with everything he says--for example I think it might be possible for a package to cooperate with dpkg--but I do agree with the base issue that eventually dpkg needs to learn about aliasing, and that likely means that dpkg needs to be involved with usrmerge transition either during the transition or after the fact. (And if it is after, it's going to be more clunky). Moreover, the TC has effectively agreed with the issue by talking about how we don't want to move files in packages. I don't think you need to block waiting for dpkg work, and I think it's fine for usrmerge to become transitively essential and to go transition systems. But I don't think it is fair to say Simon's horse is dead or to try and shut down discussion about how we're going to eventually solve the dpkg aliasing problem. --Sam
