Glrgk. This is a harmful feature in git which should IMO generally not be used. You can easily disable it in a tree basis with the following command: dgit setup-gitattributes IDK if you are using dgit but I think this should fix your git-buildpackage problem whether you are using dgit or not. (Also if you were using dgit it would probably have printed a warning about this at some point, depending on at what stage you invoked dgit.)
