May be you did not read the whole thread, I suppose you missed the flow. This reply was immediately after DSA suggestion of not duplicating services [1]. Then I proposed gitlab as a possible replacement [2][3] and gitolite was also suggested. I created a wiki page to compare the options [4] and it was decided to run gitlab instance as experimental service. gitolite was not in the scene then.
