It happened to me a couple of weeks ago too and I was left with a
totally unusable system. I lost two days of work during which I
reinstalled a minimal base system and made sure I don't install a trace
of GNOME and systemd anymore.

A kind soul has published what it takes to make a usable system without
all the anti-features of GNOME and other "user-friendly" desktop
systems.
