Did you read that correctly? GNOME Shell *does* work on x86 systems without 3D acceleration, and I don't think 'most' developers or sysadmins run GUIs on non-x86 machines. That's not to say that this isn't a real limitation. It would certainly be good to have GNOME fully working on all our architectures again, and particularly MIPS laptop and desktop systems.
