Did you use anything (I mean any other input device) else than your
touchpad or Microsoft mouse? I can see some suspicious messages that
refer to 'HID-compliant Mouse'. It's possible that it's just your
touchpad running generic driver but I'd like to confirm that.

Does the problem also occur at the login screen?

Ok. Can you tell us which version of Xorg and gnome are you running? You
can check that by running:
dpkg --status xorg | grep Version
dpkg --status gnome | grep Version
