Hi, thanks for bringing this up. I was always very happy when a package provides good integrated handling of multiple instances, and for many years (silently) have the opinion that this should be provided by many more packages in Debian.
My preferred solution is the one done by the OpenVPN package and a few others (xen?): New instances are created by a new configuration file /etc/openvpn/foo.conf (or directory; I have switched to tinc since a while, so I don’t recall precisely). $ /etc/init.d/openvpn start/stop/restart affects all instances, while $ /etc/init.d/openvpn start/stop/restart foo only affects foo. I find that much more elegant than copying init scripts, and would expect a similar interface from modern init systems (but maybe I’m overly optimistic here).
