A few packages currently install into /usr/src: awe-drv, debian-cd, etc. 

I really fail to see what's wrong with that. IMHO, the local sysadmin has
enough space for sources in /usr/local/src. Why should we treat sources
different from libs, binaries, documentations, etc.?
