No, this doesn't do what I want. The "kernel bootup noise" I'm talking about are the verbose kernel bootup messages *before root is mounted*. sysctl starts *after* root is mounted. BTW the default /etc/sysctl.conf that comes with the Debian package contains a commented-out version of the above "kernel.printk = 3 4 1 3 " already.
