Sure it can, and it *will* be fixed as soon as someone does that :) The bug is 6 years old but, at the same time, the package hasn't been uploaded to the Debian archive for the past 4 years. Chances are that the maintainer, Cc:-ed, has lost interest in maintaining the package or is simply in need of help. How about you prepare an nmudiff and post it to the bug log for review as a concrete step forward to fix the issue? If the maintainer does not reply, you can then ask for sponsoring (to the maintainer, to -mentors, or the like) and eventually even step in as the maintainer of a package you seem to care about.
