Hi Josselin and all, debian-devel is not a moderated mailing list. The discussion about spaces and commas was not initiated by the DEP drivers, and we did not contribute most of its messages. I agree to take some of the blame for not managing to avoid or stop it, but let's be realistic: this is how debian-devel is. When I proposed to take the discussion somewhere else a few monthes ago, I was badly flamed as well. And I would have appreciated the support of those who complain today about the noise. Each contribution I make to this DEP has to goal of making our life easier as maintaiers. Copyright file is optional. Files field can be omitted if it contains ‘*’. I spend the time of reading all messages in this thread to make sure that ideas and comments that reach consensus will be integrated. There will be free-form comments, there will be a FAQ that reminds that not all licenses require a verbatim copy of the copyright statements, and for the most common licenses, we can document this in the list of abbreviations. What you probably complain about is this: Your debian/copyright file must contain the following information: - The author(s) name - The year(s) of the copyright - The used license(s) - The URL to the upstream source In many packages there is more than one author, more than one copyright-holder and more than one license. Do not miss to list them all, even if that other license is just for one file. Yes, any single file is important. This very strict rule was re-confirmed a few hours ago by one of the Project's archive administrators. This is not in the DEP, and I dislike it as much as you and others. I maintain small packages, but many of them, and the efforts it takes me to prepare debian/copyright before uploading to the new package queue of our archive represent often more than half of the work. It kills the fun. I find the machine-readable format a valuable tool to help me avoid rejection. And I admit it is also good for stirring up the s… Your GR did not have success, Stefano was not elected DPL, so it seems that the majority of the Developers is happy with the standards that the archive administrators are imposing to us. Maybe Debconf is the best place to figure out whether this is a false impression.
