If you are talking about the dependency resolver that is now in aptitude (since this paper is from 2005), it is indeed by far more powerful than that of APT, trying many solutions and giving them scores based on the things it manages to achieve. However, despite being more powerful on paper, it is far less efficient on real-world upgrades. Actually you will find that the simple heuristics in APT work far better for large-scale upgrades than the more complex algorithms. -- .''`. : :' : We are debian.org.
