AFAIK, Ubuntu has introduced a new package called "ghostscript" (as
successor of gs-gpl) which supersedes gs-esp, gs-gpl and gs-afpl and
provides dummy/transitional packages for gs-esp/gs-gpl which depend on
the ghostscript package to ensure a smooth upgrade.

I cannot understand why transition like this one are done in Ubuntu rather than
in Debian?
If they were done directly in Debian, ubuntu could benefit from the result as
well since they synchronize their repositories regularly. Now the Debian users
have to wait for the ubuntu solution to trickle into Debian...
