I should think that the maintainers are best qualified to make the call whether to orphan or remove a package. Removing the package from Debian will not affect current users that much, it reflects that there is no ongoing development and that starting to use it now isn't a good idea. Also, the audio files can perfectly well be accessed with other programs, so users are not left without alternatives. If the maintainers think that shipping it with lenny is a bad idea, it should be removed.
