Just for the record, I had a problem with openssh having been compiled for generic SPARC and running painfully slowly on SPARC v8 systems. Rebuilding with v8 enabled helped dramatically (virtually instant connection instead of 10+ seconds depending on the CPU model, measured with a wrist watch).
