[Context: When renaming a package, can we make use of dpkg's feature to disappear the old package on upgrade?] So you're thinking of 'dpkg --configure --dont-fail-if-not-installed' that could be used by default in apt? What about teaching apt to remove a package from the list when it goes into state not-installed during unpack?
