Hi, I finally managed to upload the new WordNet version. I had to build a new upstream source ball because upstream does not provide the real database source in the same tarball as the binary program. Thus I mixed the two upstream tarballs WNgrind-2.1.tar.gz (containing database source and the grind program that processes the database) and WordNet-2.1.tar.gz (that contains the wordnet code) to one single tarball and rewrote the autofoo stuff to build database and code from one source.
Once I had to change the source I just added the wnfilter program that was written by Rik Faith and used by the former dict-wn package maintainer Bob Hilliard to obtain the dict-wn dictionary from the wordnet database. It was originally written for WordNet version 1.6 and worked perfectly for WordNet 2.0. Unfortunately it does not work for version 2.1 any more. This can be verified by ## dict can not find term "test" ~$ dict -d wn test No definitions found for "test", perhaps you mean: wn: testy jest nest pest zest teat text ## but it finds "text" ~$ dict -d wn text 1 definition found
From WordNet (r) 2.1 (July 2005) [wn]:
text n 1: the words of something written; "there were more than a thousand words of text"; "they handed out the printed text of the mayor's speech"; "he wants to reconstruct the original text" [syn: {textual matter}] 2: a passage from the Bible that is used as the subject of a sermon; "the preacher chose a text from Psalms to introduce his sermon" 3: a book prepared for use in schools or colleges; "his economics textbook is in its tenth edition"; "the professor wrote the text that he assigned students to buy" [syn: {textbook}, {text edition}, {schoolbook}, {school text}] [ant: {trade book}] 4: the main body of a written work (as distinct from illustrations or footnotes etc.); "pictures made the text easier to understand" ## But the Wordnet dictionary definitely contains "test" ~$ wordnet test -over Overview of noun test The noun test has 6 senses (first 5 from tagged texts) 1. (103) test, mental test, mental testing, psychometric test -- (any standardized procedure for measuring sensitivity or memory or intelligence or aptitude or personality etc; "the test was standardized on a large sample of students") 2. (103) test, trial, run -- (the act of testing something; "in the experimental trials the amount of carbon was measured separately"; "he called each flip of the coin a new trial") 3. (90) test, trial -- (the act of undergoing testing; "he survived the great test of battle"; "candidates must compete in a trial of skill") 4. (76) trial, trial run, test, tryout -- (trying something to find out about it; "a sample for ten days free trial"; "a trial of progesterone failed to relieve the pain") 5. (45) examination, exam, test -- (a set of questions or exercises evaluating skill or knowledge; "when the test was stolen the professor had to make a new set of questions") 6. test -- (a hard outer covering as of some amoebas and sea urchins) Overview of verb test The verb test has 7 senses (first 3 from tagged texts) 1. (37) test, prove, try, try out, examine, essay -- (put to the test, as for its quality, or give experimental use to; "This approach has been tried with good results"; "Test this recipe") 2. (9) screen, test -- (test or examine for the presence of disease or infection; "screen the blood for the HIV virus") 3. (4) quiz, test -- (examine someone's knowledge of something; "The teacher tests us every week"; "We got quizzed on French irregular verbs") 4. test -- (show a certain characteristic when tested; "He tested positive for HIV") 5. test -- (achieve a certain score or rating on a test; "She tested high on the LSAT and was admitted to all the good law schools") 6. test -- (determine the presence or properties of (a substance)) 7. test -- (undergo a test; "She doesn't test well") I'm absolutely uneducated about the dict format and have no idea why some words were found but some others are not found. For the moment I decided to upload the new WordNet packages to experimental until this issue is solved. I hope for some help (also group maintainance is welcome) to sort this out.
