Right. Although technically the kernel module would still be loaded so the network would still work until you reboot. To be slap honest I actually didn't have too much problems -- I had manually copied backup debs over before the upgrade, but I resented the fact that the *-source package built a deb that required so much TLC and planning to work with. I would have hoped the *-source package would "wear it's requirement on it's sleeve." The takeaway I've gotten from this is dpkg is dumb as a brick and I will only *ever* use apt from a temporary repository. I like my transactions to have ACID consistency and dpkg does not have this by design - apt does.
