If you've ever administered over 100 machines, getting cron output mailed to root for anything and everthing gets really old fast. Most people use procmail (or some other filter) to make it manageable, but at that point, why not just log it? Only errors (as opposed to spurious stdout and stderr messages) should be reported in the mail. It might also pay to offer a "log errors instead of mailing them" option (plus a few corollary options) for the base-system root cron jobs.
