Let me throw something else into the discussion here. With the new installer I expect we'll be able to produce significantly improves versions of the installer after sarge is released, that include things like kernel updates and other new features, and still support installing sarge (in addition to etch). The problem is that although they may install using a newer kernel, they have to get kernel packages to install from some apt repository. If that turns out to be volatile, so be it, if not we'll probably at least set up a backports style repository for such kernel images. -- see shy jo
