The v4l backend is broken due to the new linux-kernel-headers package shipping 2.6 kernel headers. I discovered the problem 2 days ago, and fixed it upstream. SANE 1.0.13 will be released this week-end, so I won't fix the 1.0.12 packages currently in unstable. Expect 1.0.13 to hit unstable this week-end or early next week.
