Ugh, Lets not start this flamewar here. I called it Firebird for the same reason as people say Linux instead of GNU/Linux and Bob instead of Robert: it's shorter and I'm lazy. I don't think anyone was confused by it particularly, especially since I refer to the full package name later on in the mail.
