While the term registry comes from Windows, it's worth noting that AIX had the equivalent ('object manager') (which has nothing to do with OOP) long before. And it's just as much a pain in the ass on AIX, as one never knows where a configuration item comes from, and whether changing the usual configuration file will do something useful, or whether the change will be preserved. Well, it's not quite as bad as the Windows version, because it doesn't corrupt itself when looked at sideways, since it was written by competent people.
