It must said that comparing Gentoo with Debian in this regard is unfair as they are not like for like, being source against binary package. I think the best objective maybe to try and do at least 1 release a year, which is enough for most people. Do we gain much from this, well probably not directly no, however it "looks good". I think some of the current issues related to the fact that Debian is seen as the snail of the pack when it comes to releases. Yes sure this is pandering to the masses a bit but it ensures that Debian stays in the limelight.
