You might have luck with 2.4 and the UDF filesystem and udftools. Haven't tried it myself, so I'm not sure it'll work. :)
But I have already tried: the kernel still assume the cd drive as read-only at low level (or so I've been said :) , so I can only create a loopback udf filesystem on the hard disk. :-(
