How does Quake differ from any other projects in contrib in this way?
Contrib consists of free things where the source is available and
therefore can be used as education for interested programmers. The
only reason that it isn't in main is that it is unuseable without
extra stuff that can't be placed in main.
Putting Quake in main would make contrib unneeded.
