Actually, it shouldn't use either -- it should use the magic substitution strings, which would cause the message to be displayed not only in the correct format, but to have the correct content even if the user had rebound the keys. *Note (elisp)Keys in Documentation::. Isn't Emacs neat? -- Shields, CrossLink.
