Package: uucp Version: any N.B.: I earlier sent this to pixar, but resubmit because I.Jackson in the debian-user maillist indicated communication problems there.
Not really a bug, but something I think ought to be changed in the configuration: The Debian uucp package comes without any configuration files installed. Information on the configuration files is incomplete and misleading. UUCP in Taylor configuration should have a 'config' file in /usr/lib/uucp/ or something. Debian and FSSTND like to put all that in /etc/, so /etc/uucp/ is a good choice. However, there is only a crontab file there. /var/lib/dpkg/info/uucp.conffiles mentions files: Devices, Dialers, Permissions, Systems, and crontab. I constructed the files 'Systems' and 'Dialers' (modeled after 'sys' and 'dial' from the UUCP info). However, 'uucico' complains "Systems: cannot open file". I changed ownership, permsissions etc. of 'Systems' and /etc/uucp/: same result. Then I renamed the files to the canonical 'sys' and 'dial': that worked! I added files 'call' and 'port' according to docs; I don't know what files 'Devices' and 'Permissions' are supposed to be. So would you PLEASE - document the names and locations of the files the UUCP programs are looking for, including ownership and permissions. - change the error messages to be consistent with the files actually used. Sincerely, Tom Peters
