sl?: will only be in /proc/net/devif you have any serial line in xSLIBy mode
(alsattach or dip running). If there ius no serial/pty line in linemode,
there is no entry in /proc/net/dev. There is no real good way to check for
slip availability other than stting up a pty and tryaing an slattach (or
soemthing similiar).
