It's useful when you're in a development environment where you've got directories that are group writable. On the other hand, I'd guess most large-scale development projects now use CVS rather than group writable directories as a sharing mechanism. FWIW when I was a sysadmin I generally put all untrusted users in a single group (or divided them into classes of groups).
