This problem definitely occurs in the umsdos file system code. Further investigation indicates it also occurs in the msdos, nfs, and smbfs file system code.
I'm reassigning this bug to the image package (or should it be the source package? modules?). I'll be submitting a patch in a few hours. -- Raul
