No argument about it being a nasty hack. That's why I didn't suggest it. Of course it'd be necessary to arrange for dpkg swallow the keystrokes without prompting, and detect nonavailibility of keystrokes to be swallowed to stop swallowing. Forget it. We've both got other fish to fry.
