I think you've got the wrong end of the stick - he says specifically that `groups user` (although he mistyped) does not list audio, although they appear to be in the group in /etc/group. I have no advice to offer, except possibly to check his nsswitch.conf to make sure that he has either files or compat in there for his group entry.
