Did you read the rest of what I wrote? I don't think you insisted hard enough on shooting yourself in the foot to warrant the outcome that you got, unless there's a good reason why it has to be that way. So I'm asking about what would come of changing the default behavior in that situation, as long as you could still get the current behavior with --force-unpack. Once I think I understand the knock-on effects, I might attempt to code up a patch, if someone else doesn't beat me to it.
