[ttf font] the use of "simsun.ttf" is not recommended because copyright issues.
Howerer, there are four GPL font provided by Arphic (http://www.arphic.com.tw) # Arphic Mingti Light BIG5 (Traditional) http://www.arphic.net/tw/download/bsmi00lp.zip # Arphic Kaiti Medium BIG5 (Traditional) http://www.arphic.net/tw/download/bkai00mp.zip # Arphic Shusung GB2312 (Simplified) http://www.arphic.net/tw/download/gbsn00lp.zip # Arphic Kaiti GB2312 (Simplified) http://www.arphic.net/tw/download/gkai00mp.zip you may need only one file from above. for example if you use simplified-chinese you can view chinese and input chinese by only retreive "gbsn00lp.zip" and unpack it and put the .ttf file into "/usr/share/fonts/" if you use font-config. if you don't want to download the file manually, there is another choice for you: run "apt-get install ttf-arphic-gbsn00lp" as root this will install "AR PL SungtiL GB" Chinese TrueType font by Arphic Technology relative packages: ttf-arphic-bkai00mp - "AR PL KaitiM Big5" Chinese TrueType font by Arphic Technology ttf-arphic-bsmi00lp - "AR PL Mingti2L Big5" Chinese TrueType font by Arphic Technology ttf-arphic-gbsn00lp - "AR PL SungtiL GB" Chinese TrueType font by Arphic Technology ttf-arphic-gkai00mp - "AR PL KaitiM GB" Chinese TrueType font by Arphic Technology [location of "fonts.conf"] Sorry it's my fault: the configuration file for font-config is located in "/etc/fonts/fonts.conf" NOT "/etc/fonts.conf" [xcin] after installed "xcin" , you can view some useful info by "dpkg --status xcin" there are several "suggested" packages , one of these "suggested" packages is "ttf-arphic-gbsn00lp", our simplified-chinese Simsung ttf font. [array30] array30 is a chinese-input-method developed by (http://www.array.com.tw). [start "xcin" in Gnome] settings can be found here : "Application -> Desktop -> Advanced -> Session -> Startup Programs Tag" click "add" then type "xcin" in the input text box or here: "Application -> Debian Menu -> Apps -> Xcin" this will start Xcin imediately [Problems] when use locale of "zh_CN.GB2312" you can create file with chinese characters in its name ,but the string will be converted to UTF-8 while writed to disk, so you can only view you chinese-named file in your Gnome desktop, in Terminal window you will get unreadable string contains a number of "?". this maybe default action of Gnome and I dont know why.
