Hi Uwe, >I had a try installing sarge using the cd images from >ftp://ftp.uni-bremen.de/pub/mirrors/debian_cdimages/debian-unofficial/sarge >without success :-\ > >The dist-upgrade failed since the file Packages.gz seems to >point to wrong files like /data/.2/debian/pool/... which should >actually point to pool/... That's a well known problem. Please compare Bug #198265, http://lists.debian.org/debian-cd/2003/debian-cd-200306/msg00049.html and http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2003/debian-boot-200306/msg00272.html. >So my workarround was to copy the cdrom to the hard disk, >create a link [copied cdrom]/data/.2/debian/pool and do a >dist-upgrade from there. This one seemed to work. I tried the same and failed. >Unfortunately there are 9 cdroms left which do not fit on my >harddisk. You need only the first CD to install the base system. IIRC the bug in Packages.gz should be related to .udeb's only. I know that apt-cdrom adds debian-installer modules to /etc/apt/sources.list, I suggest you remove these paths from this file. >Is there anyone who expierenced the same problems? Maybe there >are simpler workarounds. I do not know a better solution. A workaround may be installing all required .udeb's manually. There is a tool (I do not remember the program name, but it is similar to "udpk") which can be used to do this and to install these packages into the ramdisk. But please note that you have to care about dependencies, install in the right order! But that's related to the base install only and you have to do this only once! >I still cannot get X to run. I installed xf86* packages from the >sarge cd1. I used xf86config to get an XF86Config file. >The problem is that there is not link (or prog) >/usr/X11R6/bin/X. This should not happen. Please try dpkg-reconfigure xfree86-common this creates the config file for you. Install the metapackage x-window-system to obtain all necessary packages. (aptitude is my preferred package management system, try it). If you use German locale than it's very important to install xfonts-100dpi-transcoded and xfonts-75dpi-transcoded too. Otherwise X will terminate without any warning or error (happens to me in Woody, I'm not sure about Sarge). >Thanks for any hints. > >Regards, Uwe PS: Please CC: me, I'm not subscribed to this list.
