I stopped and restarted and it was OK. The next time I reboot, if it comes up OK (or if recompiling the nvidia.ko is needed and works OK), then we can close it! Note: That glib.sh script that gets installed and then run with a re-init is testing kernel version (clue that LD_ASSUME_KERNEL to an obsoleted version would be problematic). Many users who have been playing with jackd audio will have this line in their profile or environment (and I have seen it recommended elsewhere as well!). So it might be desirable to have this script look for stuff like this and possibly offer to comment out or remove such stuff. Such items may have caused several bugs listed and complaints on the users list. Thanks a bunch for your help. Debian folks are the greatest.
