The oldest kernel I have around to test with is 2.6.14, and coreutils seems to build ok there on a bind-mounted tree. I guess the behavior change dates back to an earlier kernel than this. Can we trust that the buildds will be running etch kernels soon after etch is released? If so, a hand-build of the current version for s390 would be enough to let us knock this bug off the RC list, for sure.
