I lied.
I tried changing the proxy settings.
It turns out that proxy settings don't take affect immediately, so
when I deleted the proxy settings it still tried to use the old
settings.
It turns out that "proxy:3128" is not a valid proxy value, I needed to
use "http://proxy:3128".
Possibly the error message could be improved too.
