This is not severity critical. It breaks your X session, right. But, the
whole system is not broken, you didn't loose any data, non-X packages
still work fine, no security hole appeared, ...

This looks very strange to me... Did you reproduce this with apt-get or
aptitude instead of wajig? Could you tell us (maybe by looking in
/var/log/dpkg.log) which packages got upgraded from which version to
which version last time this problem occurred?

I am not sure copying a Xsession file from knoppix is such a good idea.
Why don't you just reinstall the x11-common package with apt-get?

If you mix Debian and Knoppix stuff, I don't know what may happen... I
wonder whether it is not what actually caused your problem on upgrade...

Up to now I wonder why I never got any breakage like this except maybe
when switching from XFree86 to Xorg :)

With the upcoming Xorg 7.2, you will get hardware auto-detection.
