I have the same problem on:
Linux version 2.6.17-2-686 (Debian 2.6.17-9) ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc
version 4.1.2 20060901 (prerelease) (Debian 4.1.1-13)) #1 SMP Wed Sep 13

Ok, I can reproduce this after all; it just wasn't obvious because the init
script returns success, and only afterwards does pike7.6 segfault when
launching caudium. Not exactly good practice for an init script.
I can get caudium to work in this box if i recompile caudium with debug...
Doesn't your original report say that rebuilding with debug gives a SIGABRT?
Well, I'm not a very experienced developer, but I did get a working
caudium at several times (when compiling with debug, without debug alwas
fails) but I realize that compiling several times to get a working binary
is not ok, but maybe a way to find the bug...
Thanks,
