Hi,
I've just reproduced a similar failure, building with sbuild in an etch
i386 chroot:

I tried to build twice, got the failure each time. However, I also confirm than
under other conditions (sid chroot, without sbuild), it doesn't fail.

Good luck with this, it doesn't look easy to investigate ... :)
