Package: casparcg-server Version: 2.3.3+dfsg-3.2 Severity: serious User: debian...@lists.debian.org Usertags: proposed-removal
I am the maintainer of the upstream project, and I have had a few bug reports recently because of the packaging here. I should start with adding that there is no current maintainer of the debian package https://bugs.debian.org/1071139 and the package has been removed from testing as it FTBFS https://tracker.debian.org/news/1560497/ popcon shows only a handful (<10) users of the package. There are new releases upstream from april 2024 which have not been pulled in due to lack of a debian maintainer, the latest of which are buildable on stable without needing any patches (I am maintaining some deb packaging now too). There is a bug report from late 2022 (with no maintainer respose) against ubuntu 22.04 where the package fails to run for some (maybe all?) users https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/casparcg-server/+bug/1988036. I was able to reproduce this bug, and this has also been reported upstream. The most recent report upstream has revealed that the package in ubuntu 24.04 is largely unusable due to some needed updates to ffmpeg api usage. This bug I suspect affects builds against ffmpeg 5.0 and later based on the fix upstream https://github.com/CasparCG/server/commit/6bb06aa7cb2c409dff4ba4978c979c29a09c8034. If this is an accurate assessment, this means it will affect ubuntu 22.10 and later, and likely debian stable (bookworm). I think the lack of this being reported confirms that there are no real users of this package. I believe this means that every version of the package in a non EOL debian/ubuntu release is broken (there is no package in old-stable, due to it being FTBFS at the time). Additionally, the versions packaged here are bit limited due to CEF not being available as a debian package. Due to this limitation I believe that these builds will not be useful to a large proportion of the userbase. So please remove this package. If possible I think it should be removed from current releases too, but I suspect that is against policy.
