Yep, actually it behaves exactly as intended. ;) So, I recommend to
just do

  dpkg -P postgresql postgresql-client

to get rid of the ancient stuff and then do a clean install of
postgresql-8.1

OK, I will do that, and in addition also print out some bits to
stderr, so that people not using the interactive frontend will get a
hint what's wrong.
