There is a major regression in grep 3.11-1: I now get an error

This is just a big maildir mailbox (195700 messages).

I can't see any system error. This just seems to come from grep.
And the error message is rather meaningless!
This error occurs on my 2 machines. I've downgraded grep to 3.8-5
(testing/stable) on one of them, and the error disappeared.
